What's distracting you from your quiet times?

ree

I don't know about you but it never fails that when I sit down to open up my bible, very often, something else begins to call my attention.

Something that always feels important in that moment.

Sometimes it's a trip to the bathroom.

Sometimes it's my desire for another mocha.

Sometimes it's the kids need for food or a new notification on my phone.

Sometimes I just suddenly remember some random thing that needs to be done like pay a bill or answer back a text.

It doesn't matter what it is, just that there is always something trying to get in the way of my goal of seeking the Lord.

Something that has helped me to combat these distractions over the years has been to remember 3 things.

1. My flesh will always crave comfort and ease over the work and effort of reading my bible, meditating on it, praying for others and journaling the insights gained.

This means that I will have to fight my own brain and desires in order to receive the precious benefits of that quiet time.

2. The enemy of my soul always comes to steal, kill and destroy.

This means that I will also have to fight attacks from satan because he wants nothing more than to rob me of the life giving power and guidance that I am always guaranteed to receive when I sit at the feet of Jesus.

3. My quiet times are not just for me.

This means that every quiet time that I have, whether it be for 5 minutes or 3 hours, will benefit not only myself but everyone that I come into contact with throughout my day.

No matter how much time I have, I will always receive something.

I will receive patience which will pour down into my husband and children.

I will receive a renewed sense of purpose that can help to make my homemaking feel more like a blessing and less like a chore or duty.

I will receive strength to walk through hard things.

I will receive courage to confront waywardness in the life of another believer.

I will receive encouragement to speak life into another sisters situation.

I will receive peace that can help me to feel accomplished at the end of the day, even if all I did was love on my family and send a sweet text to a friend.

The point is this, distractions are going to come each time that you attempt to have your quiet time because life happens, our flesh is weak and our enemy's pursuit of our demise is never ending.

For those reasons we can prepare for this battle by asking our Father for help to fight any and all distractions that will come our way.

We can lay out our quiet time items the night before so that there is less to think about in the morning.

We can turn our phones on "do not disturb" and put them in a drawer in another room during our quiet times.

We can also prepare food for our children or even pull out special toys for them to play with that can only be played with during our quiet times.

No matter what distraction you face when trying to prioritize your quiet times, ask the Lord for help in fighting them, and then prepare as best as you can so that you can enjoy your time with God for as long as you have that day.
